CALL TO ACTION

ISSUES OF IMPORTANCE

6/1/2025 - Defend Medicare and Medicaid from Cuts in the "One Big Beautiful Bill"

On May 22, the U.S. House narrowly passed H.R. 1, a budget proposal that puts health care at risk for millions — including hundreds of thousands of Missourians.

The bill would impose new work requirements, frequent eligibility checks, and added costs for many Medicaid recipients, including those covered through Missouri’s voter-approved Medicaid expansion. These changes could lead to major coverage losses across the state. It also penalizes states like Missouri for covering lawfully present immigrants, bans Medicaid coverage for gender-affirming care, and adds red tape that makes it harder for people to enroll or stay enrolled.

Although Medicare isn’t directly changed, the bill’s large tax cuts would trigger over $500 billion in automatic Medicare cuts under federal budget rules — impacting over 1.2 million Missouri seniors who rely on the program.

The Senate is now considering this proposal. Missourians should urge their U.S. senators to protect Medicaid and Medicare — programs that support our families, seniors, and neighbors — and to oppose any budget that sacrifices health care to pay for tax breaks.

5/20/2025 - Reject Nonprofit Censorship

The House Ways & Means Committee has included language in their budget reconciliation “megabill” that will hand the executive branch new and far reaching powers to silence dissent in the United States. The provision is pulled from H.R. 9495, the Stop Terror-Financing and Tax Penalties on American Hostages Act which grants the Secretary of the Treasury virtually unfettered discretion to designate any U.S. nonprofit as a “terrorist supporting organization” and to strip it of its tax-exempt status. The legislation does not require disclosure of the reasons for such a decision or the evidence relied upon to support it, nor would the government be required to provide any evidence in its possession that might undermine its decision.

The potential for abuse under H.R. 9495 is immense, as the administration would be handed a tool it could use to curb free speech, censor nonprofit media outlets, target political opponents, and punish disfavored groups across the political spectrum. Moreover, the addition of this authority to the tax code would allow the IRS to explicitly target and harass domestic nonprofits using its investigative authority. This authority could be used to target political opponents through the fear of crippling legal fees, the stigma of the designation, and donors fleeing controversy to stifle dissent, chilling free speech and advocacy.

4/20/2025 - Oppose Funding Cuts to NPR and PBS

Public broadcasting is a vital pillar of American democracy, providing trusted, local news and educational programming to communities across the country—especially in rural areas where it's often the only source of reliable information. Yet the administration is now pushing to slash $1.1 billion in funding from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, threatening the survival of more than 1,000 NPR and 336 PBS stations. These proposed cuts—championed under the misleading banner of “Anti-American Airwaves”—would gut local newsrooms, silence emergency broadcasts, and weaken a key resource for civic education. This isn’t about politics; it’s about preserving the public’s access to truth, culture, and critical local reporting.

THE RULE OF LAW AND CHECKS & BALANCES EXPLAINED

At We Stand United, our commitment to upholding the rule of law and preserving our system of checks and balances reflects our dedication to the foundational principles that ensure justice, accountability, and the proper functioning of our democracy.

What is the Rule of Law?

The rule of law means everyone must follow the same rules—no matter who they are. This includes individuals, institutions, and even the government. The laws must be:

  • Clear and easy to understand

  • Fairly applied to everyone

  • Decided by courts that are independent and fair

By adhering to the rule of law, we ensure fairness, protect individual rights, and maintain order within society.

What Are Checks and Balances?

Our government is divided into three parts, or "branches," so that no one group can have too much power. This system is called checks and balances. Each branch has different responsibilities and can limit the power of the others:

  • Congress (Legislative) – Makes laws

  • President (Executive) – Enforces laws

  • Courts (Judicial) – Interprets laws and decides if they follow the Constitution

For example, Congress can pass a law, but the President can veto it. Then, the courts can decide if the law is fair. This balance of power makes sure no one can make unfair rules or take control.

Why Does This Matter?

When we follow the rule of law and use checks and balances, we make sure our democracy is fair, strong, and protects everyone’s rights. It keeps power in the hands of the people, prevents corruption, and helps our country run smoothly.
